Blog #6- What I needed to enter Turkey, as a U.S. Citizen (March 2022)

Disclaimer- I’m only sharing my experience and what helped me. Please make sure to cross-reference everything I say with your local embassy, the CDC, and any other legal entity that may affect your travel plans.

This is what I needed to enter Turkey.

Since I went to Turkey with a connecting flight in Barcelona, I needed to have my Spanish QR Health form ready (link to Spanish health form).

Once I passed customs/passport control in Barcelona, showing my Spanish Health Form, Valid U.S. Passport, and Vaccine Card, I continued to get to my next flight from BCN to SAW (Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport), via Pegasus.

Tip: There are two airports in Istanbul, the smaller one is SAW (located on the Asian side) and IST (the most common and bigger one). Depending on where you stay choose an airport that is close in proximity to your hotel and/or accommodation. This will help you NOT miss your flight- as I drove 1 hour plus to get back to SAW airport.

I do recommend visiting at least once the IST airport. Recently opened in 2018 (taking over the Ataturk airport), IST provides a luxury feel. It's is located on the European side and includes shops (once you pass the security checkpoint) such as Dior, Gucci, Bottega, Bvlgari, etc. Since it is international and more recognized than SAW, the security checkpoint is extremely long so make sure to come early!

Once I arrived in Turkey, I had to purchase a:

Visa - ₺455 Turkish Lira (apx. $30.67). - You can purchase the visa inside the airport, right before Passport control (it's located to the left side next to Passport control).
Pass through Passport control. - Show my passport & vaccination card. (During the time of travel, March 8-26, 2022, I did not need to have a negative Covid test since I was fully vaccinated- I also had my booster shot). - *travel requirements may change so please make sure to verify everything.
That was it.

I highly recommend having Turkish Lira and purchasing it before you arrive. While you can pay in cash and Visa credit card (vary by location) it is best to go to a local currency exchange before your trip or request a currency from your bank (make sure to do this way ahead of time since banks typically have to order the currency and processing can take longer).
